Germany asks the USA to liberate business from anti-Russian sanctions

19.04.2018

Germany is willing to liberate German business from participation in anti-Russian sanctions, which result in losses of hundreds of million Euros. The Wall Street Journal informed about it on April 18 according to unnamed German government sources.

The Journal says that Germany’s Finance Minister Olaf Scholz, who will visit Washington next week, is going to make a corresponding request to the USA President Donald Trump. The same issue, according to edition, will be brought up by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who will have a meeting with Trump in the end of April. It should be noted that it concerns the whole German business and not some individual companies.

The Journal believes that large German companies actively doing business in Russia put pressure on Merkel, since they bear losses due to anti-Russian sanctions initiated by Washington.

This being said, the goods turnover between Germany and Russia increased by 11 bln to EUR 54.4 bln in 2017.
